Bishops Square, Spitalfields
Situated on the border of the City of London and the East End, between Bishopsgate and Spitalfield Market, Bishops Square is part of the renewal of one of London's most historically important neighbourhoods. Foster + Partner's masterplan includes offices, housing, shops and cafes as well as 3,000 square meters of public space, with One Bishops Square, headquarters of Allen & Overy as a centrepiece. Matthew Lloyd Architects' apartment block with ground floor restaurant and refurbishment of a listed Victorian hall formed the final part of the plan to accommodate both the aesthetic demands of the historic setting and the commercial demands of the site's owners. Led by Grant Brooker of Foster + Partners, and Alex Sherratt of Matthew Lloyd Architects, the tour meets in front of Hawksmoor's masterpiece, Christ Church Spitalfields. Grant Brooker will look at Foster + Partners' masterplan for the Square and Allen & Overy's headquarters at One Bishops Square; Alex Sherratt will look at the interplay of the Grade II listed St Botolph's Hall and the mixed-use Twenty Bishops Square within a context of steel and glass.
