Re-Imagining the City
During 2011-12, the London Met Diploma 5 have been studying the City of London from its Roman beginnings to its current pre-eminence. Their studies have found the City of London to be shrouded in myth, distanced from the rest of London - isolated and self-policed as any 'sink estate' but with infinitely more power. Its focus on business and finance since World War II has seen it evolve into a mono-cultural zone in which people only go to work. Few people live there and yet 'the Square Mile' was once the whole of London and its walls encompassed all human activity that constitutes the idea of a city.
Students have evolved a practice of small actions with which to analyse the City and its environs as a physical construct as well as a social space, leading to the design of a City Building with a greater sense of generosity and porosity, which contributes to the reclamation of the City's public realm.
Students from the London Met will present their studies of the City of London in this special NLA breakfast talk.
Conversation Pieces, large timber 'instruments' made and used by students to carry out ethnographic research throughout the academic year, will also be taken to The Walbrook Building on the Olympic Float on the morning of this breakfast talk and will be on show after the event.
